Acids and carbonates………testing the gas given off and the word for today is precipitation!!
Posted by: john west in UncategorizedCarbonates react with acids according to the word equation
acid + carbonate —> salt + carbon dioxide + water.
We know that the gas given off is carbon dioxide because it turns limewater ( a solution of calcium hydroxide in water) milky
…………and now for experts.
Most of you spotted that the milky carbon dioxide solution goes clear again. First person to post a comment that gives the equation for this reaction wins a Mars bar.
and now in no particular order…
All the information is here
and the next video……..warning…this video contains language that may offend
There are a few weird extras in this movie
….and the word here is PRECIPITATE!!

Nobody said a year 12 can’t explain it;
Limewater + Carbon Dioxide -> Calcium Carbonate + Water
[Ca(OH)2 + CO2 -> CaCO3 + H2O]
The Calcium Carbonate is the white suspension formed, which is insoluble in water. This causes the cloudiness.
Continued passing of Carbon Dioxide through the cloudy limewater makes the cloudiness dissappear. Due the the formation of soluble Calcium Bicarbonate.
Calcium Carbonate + Water + Carbon Dioxide -> Calcium Bicarbonate
[CaCO3 + H2O + CO2 -> Ca(HCO3)2
Pretty easy stuff!
Now where’s my Mars bar? Hahahahaha!
