Carbonates react with acids according to the word equation

acid + carbonate —> salt + carbon dioxide + water.

We know that the gas given off is carbon dioxide because it turns limewater ( a solution of calcium hydroxide in water) milky

Brainstorm in groups using this scenario or similar:

You are in the newsroom of a local tv company. You are interviewing a scientist about what is happening.

why have there been earthquakes in recent weeks?

Where has all that molten volcanic rock come from? What does a volcano look like under the surface and how does rock get to be molten anyway? How would you explain to the public about tectonic plates? The public need to understand the cause of the disaster. Are there diagrams you could use as a reporter to help the public understand?

You can use the projector to have movie clips running behind the interview or as part of a news report.

As a group write a script for the interview. Plan the resources (diagrams clips multimedia…get creative).

The final result can be podcast, placed on the class blog on youtube if you wish.

Learn the rock cycle. Know how the three main rock types are formed. Learn the names of the main igneous rock types, igneous and plutonic (granite, gabbro etc)
