Carbonates react with acids according to the word equation

acid + carbonate —> salt + carbon dioxide + water.

We know that the gas given off is carbon dioxide because it turns limewater ( a solution of calcium hydroxide in water) milky

…………and now for experts.

Most of you spotted that the milky carbon dioxide solution goes clear again. First person to post a comment that gives the equation for this reaction wins a Mars bar.
